The Paranze is a big latin sailboat, by now in disuse, used in pairs for fishing along the coast, each one dragging an edge of a big fishing net, called "paranze" or "sciabbica". In the good season, from march to september, the "paranza" was like a second home for fishermen, where daily gestures were repeated all over again, becoming rituals handed down from father to son.

Since 1989 in the city of Termoli, place of the coastline adriatic of Molise, some voluntary lovers of the culture, agreement in everything its ample meaning that goes from the poetry to the folklore, from the dance to the song, have given life to a cultural association,  denominated ‘A Paranze, brim to study the local popular tradition for better preserving it and to propose it to the citizens in the varied possible artistic forms.

At the inside of it, it operates from a long time, as the true soul of the whole association, the homonym mariner folk group.

The specific purpose of the folk group, composed from around 40 elements, it is that to maintain alive, with dances and songs, fruit of careful and scrupulous searches, some forms of the mariner culture and civilization , becoming the authentic interpreter of the popular traditions of the people of sea.

The program that the group introduces is articulated in varied and simple way and expresses the most meaningful and recurrent aspects of the daily life:

THE CYCLE OF THE LIFE OF THE MAN
  • THE BIRTH, THE INFANCY AND THE GAMES
  • THE FALLING IN LOVE AND THE MARRIAGE
  • THE JOB
  • THE FAMILY
  • THE PRAYER
  • THE SACRED AND THE PROFANE

The songs, some of which of anonymous, are performed for the greatest part in polyphony and reproduced as they have been picked up during the searches. For their execution it is used there of a poor but essential instrumentation that is tied up, the most possible, to the original and traditional characters: acoustic guitars, accordions, tambourines, "patapum", steels and "tra-tra".

The dances are articulated in simple and explanatory choreographies representing situations of the life mariner that animated the Termoli of the past. They have enriched from movements effected with mariner utensils , also partly in disuse as creels, nets for sciabica, stremmatüre, schaffette, tremaglie, etc.

The dress, reproduced faithfully in all details, it goes up again at the end of last century and it testifies the world of the job of the Termoli's people: simple that of the woman, sues to the matters of house, and extremely practical that of the man, free in the fatiguing movements of the job.

In conclusion proposing the worries and the hopes lived daily by the fishermen, the hard work, their resigned loneliness, the song of prayer to the sea and the joy of the healthy and safe return to house, the group folk ‘A Paranze aims at to preserve and to hand down everything what is the "termolese" tradition to transmit with it that values, that genuineness, that goodness and simplicity that were at the base of the life of once and that today more and more they come to miss.
